Osteoarthritis, Muscle and Neuropathy Pain Relief
Popular pain control medications have some risk
without adequate attention to dosage and warnings about possible
risks.
Aspirin was the pain drug of choice, until
data emerged on the rather large number of bleeding-related deaths.
In fact, many pharmaceutical experts say that if aspirin had to go
through the Food and Drug Administration's approval process today
for arthritis and neuropathy pain relief it would never make it to
market.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) and naproxen
(Aleve). Ibuprofen and naproxen are known as non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, or Nsaids. They can equal or outdo
aspirin's action against arthritis pain, sore muscles, neuropathy
pain and painful inflammation but at less risk of bleeding.
However, they can irritate the gastrointestinal
tract and possibly cause ulcers. People who use Nsaids chronically
for osteoarthritis and neuropathy pain relief are often told to take
an anti-acid drug to protect their stomachs.
Cox-2 Inhibitors - Then came a new kind of
drug called a cox-2 inhibitor, sold as Celebrex, Vioxx, Bextra and
Mobic. These drugs are as good as or better than ibuprofen for
arthritis, muscle and neuropathy pain relief, although as patented
prescription medications they greatly multiplied the cost of pain
relief.
The cox-2 inhibitors were considered safer
because they reduced the risks of bleeding and gastrointestinal
damage. As major money makers, they were heavily promoted,
especially to the millions who need relief for chronic arthritis,
muscle and neuropathy pain.
Alas, these, too, have come under serious fire as
their use mushroomed and evidence emerged linking them to heart
attacks and strokes among users already at risk for these problems.
With many multimillion-dollar lawsuits looming, Vioxx was the first
to be withdrawn from the market, recently followed by Bextra. Both
drugs may come back, accompanied by more stringent warnings. Or
their cox-2 cousins, Celebrex and Mobic, may join the ranks as drugs
gone by for treating arthritis pain, muscle pain and neuropathy
pain.
This brings us to an entirely different drug,
acetaminophen. Long used to counter occasional arthritis
pain, sore muscles and neuropathy pain, fever and tension headaches,
acetaminophen is now being hailed as an excellent first choice for
the relief of chronic arthritis and neuropathy pain.
Acetaminophen, often referred to by its most popular brand name,
Tylenol, has no anti-inflammatory action. Nor does it cause bleeding
or gastrointestinal distress. Many pain specialists say it should be
considered first for relief of the persistent pain of osteoarthritis
and prolonged pain of muscle or joint injuries.
All in all, acetaminophen is a safe drug for
children and adults however taking more than 4,000 milligrams a day
of acetaminophen on a chronic basis such as for muscle, neuropathy
and arthritis pain relief can damage the liver of an adult. The
danger dose would be far smaller for young children.
Topical lidocaine patch can alleviate the pain
associated with osteoarthritis
A recent clinical trial data found patients
receiving either a lidocaine patch 5% or Celebrex(R) (celecoxib) 200
mg for pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee
experienced improvement in average daily pain intensity. This
topical lidocaine analgesic patch was approved by the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999 to treat the pain associated with
post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), a chronic condition resulting from
nerve damage caused by shingles.
These results need to be confirmed with further
randomized controlled trials, however, the potential of lidocaine to
treat osteoarthritis pain is promising. Lidocaine patches have been
used since 1999 to treat the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia and,
because it is non-systemic, the patch has demonstrated a minimal
risk of side effects or drug-to-drug interaction.
We hope is to see similar results in further pain
studies for the use of topical lidocaine to treat arthritis pain,
sore muscles, neuropathy and other chronic pain conditions.
LESPAIN®
is available in both a spray and gel formulations. These patented
formulations are unique combinations of the analgesic lidocaine and
a deep penetrating moisturizer to provide soothing

Urea, a proven, well-documented moisturizing
ingredient is effective at reducing itching. Many people, who
suffer from dry itchy skin, however, need further additional relief
from that provided by urea products alone. Dermal Therapy’s patented product LESPAIN® is unique because there are no
products either by prescription or non-prescription in the US that
combine Dermal Therapy’s penetration enhancing moisturizers with the analgesic lidocaine. This urea
based moisturizer causes skin to absorb moisture, while 4% lidocaine
successfully reduces the itching and pain, giving your skin time to heal
and letting you get on with life.

Topical Lidocaine and Pain Relief
LIDOCAINE
such as used in LESPAIN causes the loss of feeling in the skin and
surrounding tissues. It can numb the skin and mucus membranes before
procedures and is used to treat hemorrhoids.
Lidocaine is applied to skin or mucous membranes before procedures
to numb the area by a health care professional. LESPAIN may be
applied using finger tips or cotton swabs to hemorrhoids for relief
of pain. Follow the directions on the label. Do not use more often
than instructed.
Very
rarely do complications occur when applied to the skin but chest
pain, continued irregular heartbeats, difficulty breathing,
wheezing, headache, seizures (convulsions), trembling, shaking,
unusual weakness or tiredness can occur.
Ask your
care give
before using LESPAIN if you
have an unusual or allergic reaction to analgesics, other medicines,
foods, dyes, preservatives, if you are pregnant or trying to get
pregnant or are breastfeeding. Tell your health care professional
about all other medicines you are taking or if you are a frequent
user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use
illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Report
any side effects to your health care professional as soon as
possible
Be
careful to avoid injury while the area is numb from the lidocaine
and you are not aware of pain.
